LEGO Animation

Ages 7+

New Session Added!
5 Sessions beginning Nov 7 | Fridays 5:30 - 7:00 PM

Learn stop motion animation with LEGO.  Build your sets and characters and create movies complete with sound effects and titles.

Students can be expected to:

  • * Work individually and as part of a team
    * Creatively build with LEGOs (not from sets)
    * Understand how animation works
    * Create LEGO movies 20-45 seconds long
    * Gain confidence from sharing their original creations with other students and adults
    * Concepts: stop motion, frames per second (FPS), onion skinning, editing, computer literacy

Greenscreen Newscast

Ages 10-16

5 Sessions beginning Sept. 26 | Fridays 7:15 - 8:45 PM

Produce and star in your very own newscast! Sharknado?  Sports segment on Quidditch?  We’ll warm up with improv games and then record news segments “on the scene” with our green screen.  Then standby at the switchboard as our anchors count us in LIVE and introduce our segments.  This class models the process used by real news teams.

Students can be expected to:

  • * Contribute as a valued member of a team
  • * Take on roles on or off camera which model a real news team (ex: writer, reporter, anchor, camera person, editor, switchboard, director)
  • * Understand the basics of green screen film, overlays, and directing a live show
  • * Have fun in a low pressure creative environment
  • * Concepts: staging, editing, film production, acting, improvisation


Robotics Level 1

Ages 9+

6 Sessions beginning Sept. 27 | Saturdays 9 - 10:30 AM

Build and program with LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robots.  Level 1 gives students an overview of how to program basic motor movements and each of the EV3 sensors: sonar, sound, touch, gyro, and color.  Complete progressive challenges with a partner and master the robot universe!

Students can be expected to:

  • * Work with one partner (2 students per robot)
    * Get intensive hands-on experience with both building and programming
    * Follow instructions to build a basic robot; then modify based on varying tasks
    * Understand basic programming concepts including loops, switches, and parallel programming
    * Be challenged with difficult engineering problems in a supportive atmosphere

Minecraft Challenge | Dream House

You're in charge of building and renovating homes for extremely picky homeowners. Work with your team to build homes quickly and earn points. Resources are limited and, wait, who invited the Creepers!?

Students can be expected to:

  • * Work in a team of 4, with each student on their own computer
    * Use strategy to complete a timed challenge in an exciting atmophere
    * Architectural concepts: styles of homes, layout, structure
Minecraft Dream House Workshop


Minecraft Workshop | Create Your Own Skin

Workshop limited to 10 students.

Learn how to create your own custom skin to wear in Minecraft. We will introduce the free photo editing software, Gimp, to design unique skins then upload the skins for you to take home.

Students can be expected to:

  • * Work individually on their own computer
    * Understand the basics of Gimp photo editing software
    * Create a unique Minecraft character skin for use at home
    * Design Concepts: contrast, gradient, transparency

Workshops are limited to 12 students. Each workshop is repeated multiple times. Sessions C & D will open when A & B have filled.

Play with a team and enter the spooky adventure map created by Box of Light staff. Plenty of brain eating zombies and skeletons to go around.
